House 9: Opening the Secret Gates – Abracadabra
In the last post, we finished our ambitious DIY project of building a set of secret double gates at House 9. Now that the construction of the hidden gates are complete, it is time to tackle the next challenge of devising a mechanism to be able to open the gates from both inside and the outside. Of course, on the outside, the mechanism has to hidden in order to not compromise the secrecy of the hidden gate.
After some trial and error, I settled on a simple solution where the latch holding the two gates closed is lifted by means of a string which can be pulled from the outside of the gate. Here’s a view of the secret gates from the inside after the solution was implemented.
From the outside, the mechanism is invisible and the concealment of the hidden gates is still maintained and remains a well-kept secret.

This little project was a lot of fun and further adds to the cool factor of the secret gates. Who says DIY landlording can’t be fun? When you are your own boss you can make your job anything you want it to be. That’s the best part about working for yourself.
